Pope Francis Is Dead – A Legacy That United the World and Divided the Church

By Ephraim Agbo | April 21, 2025

Well… it’s official. Pope Francis is dead.

And while the world reacts with solemn tributes and trending hashtags, let’s not ignore the elephant in the Sistine Chapel: a lot of people inside the Catholic Church aren’t exactly mourning. In fact, some are likely breathing a quiet sigh of relief.

Too harsh? Maybe.
Too real? Absolutely not.

The Pope Who Didn’t Fit the Mold

From the moment Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis, he broke the mold — and ruffled the robes of the Vatican elite.

He refused the luxury apartment. He ditched the golden throne. He talked more about climate change and LGBTQ+ rights than about hellfire and tradition. To the progressive world, he was a modern-day saint. But to many within the Church’s old guard, he was a problem — a big one.

Francis pushed for reform — the kind that challenged what many powerful leaders still hold sacred: hierarchy, doctrine, order, control, and yes, silence. He tried to open the windows wide, but the structure he inherited wasn’t just outdated — it was built to resist fresh air.

And that made enemies.

Let’s Talk About the Power Struggles

Behind the Vatican’s ornate walls, it wasn’t all “peace be with you.” It was more like Game of Thrones in white robes.

Conservative bishops called him “dangerous.” Some cardinals publicly opposed him. Reports of letters, secret meetings, and outright defiance surfaced — not from outsiders, but from fellow clergymen who wore the same cross yet served a very different gospel: one of preservation.

Some even whispered about pushing for his early resignation. We may never know how far it went — the Vatican guards its secrets better than most governments — but let’s not pretend it was unity all the way through.

Francis shook the tree. And powerful men wanted him gone.

“Who Am I to Judge?” — The Line That Shook the Church

Those five words made headlines around the world. But inside the Church, they caused an earthquake.

How dare a pope — the pope — soften the stance on homosexuality? How dare he suggest that divorced Catholics might belong at the communion table? How dare he even mention the possibility of blessing same-sex couples?

To many, Pope Francis was merciful.
To the old guard, he was reckless.

And now that he’s gone, you can bet they’ll waste no time trying to dismantle what he built.

The Francis Fatigue Is Real

Let’s be honest: not everyone liked what he represented.

To his critics, Francis was more politician than pope — more interested in headlines than in preserving sacred doctrine. They saw his love for the poor as performative, his climate activism as leftist noise, and his interfaith outreach as weakness.

Now that he’s gone, there’s already chatter in traditionalist circles about “restoring orthodoxy.”

That’s code for: we’re bringing back the old ways.

Death and Politics — Even Now

He reportedly died peacefully in his sleep. That’s the official story. And maybe it’s true. But you have to wonder...
Did the pressure, the resistance, the constant inner war within his own Church speed things up?

There’s no hard proof of anything shady — but there’s plenty of smoke.

And in the Vatican, where there’s smoke, there’s often fire… or at least incense to hide it.

What Happens Now?

Francis requested a simple burial — not in the Vatican’s papal tomb, but in the Basilica of St. Mary Major. A final act of humility… or a quiet protest against the institution he tried to reform?

The next conclave will be brutal. Will they elect someone to continue his legacy? Or someone who wipes it away with polished shoes and locked doors?

One thing’s for sure: the war for the soul of the Catholic Church isn’t over. It’s just moving into its next chapter — and Pope Francis may be gone, but his ghost will linger in every debate, every doctrine, and every decision for years to come.

Final Word?

Pope Francis didn’t die a saint or a villain.
He died a fighter — a man who dared to believe the Church could be more compassionate… and paid the price for it every step of the way.

Rest, Francis.
The story is just beginning.
