Global Lens: Trump’s Expansionist Foreign Policy – A New Age of American Imperialism?

Donald Trump is back in the White House, and with him comes a foreign policy agenda that looks more like 19th-century colonialism than 21st-century diplomacy. His second-term ambitions aren’t just about “America First”—they’re about America Everywhere. From threatening to reclaim the Panama Canal to his fixation on acquiring Greenland, Trump’s expansionist rhetoric raises a serious and uncomfortable question:

Is the United States gearing up to redraw the global map by force or coercion?

And if so, will the world have the backbone to stop it?

Panama Canal: A Direct Challenge to Sovereignty or a Prelude to Intervention?

Trump didn’t waste time before throwing down the gauntlet. In his inaugural address, he declared:

"China is operating the Panama Canal. And we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back."

Let that sink in. The U.S. willingly handed over the Panama Canal in 1999 after decades of control, and now Trump is openly suggesting that the U.S. should take it back. Is this just his usual bombast, or is it a real policy direction? Because if it’s the latter, then we’re talking about a U.S. president threatening to violate international agreements, trample on the sovereignty of a smaller nation, and possibly set the stage for military intervention.

More disturbingly, Trump’s claim that “China is operating the canal” echoes his broader paranoia about Chinese global influence. The fact that a Hong Kong-based company manages some ports near the canal doesn’t mean Beijing controls it—but Trump’s words suggest he’s ready to act on misinformation.

Will the U.S. military be deployed to "secure" the canal under false pretenses?

If this isn’t imperialism, what is?

Greenland: Trump’s Obsession with Buying a Country

Trump’s absurd 2019 proposal to buy Greenland was laughed off by Denmark, but here we are again in 2025, and Trump still seems fixated on it. Why? Because Greenland sits on a jackpot of untapped oil, minerals, and strategic Arctic positioning.

But let’s not sugarcoat it: Trying to buy a country in the modern era isn’t just absurd—it’s colonialism with a checkbook. Trump is essentially suggesting that the U.S. can and should acquire land whenever it serves American interests. And what happens when a country refuses? Does the U.S. use economic pressure? Military presence? Covert interference?

If the U.S. is willing to treat Greenland like real estate, what’s stopping China from doing the same with Taiwan? What’s stopping Russia from taking more of Ukraine? If America itself no longer respects the sovereignty of nations, why should anyone else?

Canada: Trump’s Economic Blackmail?

Trade wars, tariff threats, and economic bullying—Trump’s approach to Canada is less about diplomacy and more about brute force. His latest threat? A 25% tariff on Canadian goods—allegedly in response to illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

Think about that. A trade war against a close ally, over an issue that has nothing to do with trade. Trump is using America’s economic power as a weapon, making it clear that any country—even a trusted neighbor—will be punished if they don’t fall in line.

So, let’s ask the hard questions:

  • If Canada can be strong-armed, who’s next?
  • Will the U.S. start using trade policy to push for political concessions around the world?
  • Is this economic coercion just a softer version of the imperialist mindset that led to outright military conquests in the past?

Because at this point, America under Trump isn’t just rewriting the rules—it’s burning the rulebook altogether.

The Big Question: Is the World Ready to Stand Up to a Rogue Superpower?

For decades, the U.S. has positioned itself as the defender of democracy, international law, and global stability. But under Trump, that mask is slipping fast. What we’re seeing now is a world where the U.S. takes what it wants, threatens whoever it pleases, and tramples over weaker nations with zero consequences.

So, what happens next?

  • Will the international community push back before it’s too late?
  • Will smaller nations band together to resist Trump’s new age of American imperialism?
  • Or will global powers like China and Russia use this as an excuse to rewrite their own territorial ambitions?

If history has taught us anything, it’s that unchecked power leads to chaos. And if Trump continues down this road, the world may soon find itself in a crisis it never saw coming.

Is this the start of a new world order, or the beginning of global resistance? Either way, the days of American restraint are over.
